As we move through the summer of 2008, we continue to find ourselves charting new courses through uncertain and challenging times. The cost of gasoline has risen to levels that have impaired our way of life. Every time I put gas in my car, I feel victimized by something that I cannot control. Economic turmoil has resulted in lost or reduced employment for many of our friends and associates.
It doesn’t seem right.
As a credit union, we cannot resolve the mysteries of gas prices, or resolve employment uncertainties, but we can affect the outcomes in many ways. Our objective is to assist our members in attaining financial self-sufficiency, regardless of economic conditions.
We do this in many ways, some large and some almost imperceptibly small. But the important thing is to ensure that we provide members with simple, actionable ways to be in control of their financial life.

Call for Board Nominations
Elections will be held for three (3) positions on the SCCU Board of Directors. Members desiring to serve should submit their notification to the Election Committee. Include educational background and credit union or other financial institution experience. Board members must be available to regularly attend all monthly Board and Committee meetings. The Election Committee must receive notifications no later than August 15, 2008.

Being prepared, really prepared, means having all the tools you will need ready and waiting. In addition to physical preparations, such as developing an evacuation plan and having essential items on hand, it's important that you also prepare your finances. Take the following actions now to be prepared before a disaster strikes.
- Have enough cash available to cover expenses for about a week. Small denominations or Traveler's Checks are best.
- Sign up for Direct Deposit. It may be hard to receive or cash a check after a storm.
- Stay informed of potential financial scams and fraud. A crisis brings out the good and bad in people. When in question, ask for ID and proper licenses.
- Designate an out-of-area contact who can serve as a central resource for both you and other friends and family who may need to communicate.

- Stock up on your supplies of water, canned food, and dry goods.
- Fill your grill's propane tank.
- Replenish your battery and candle supply.
When a Storm Threatens
- Fill the gas tank of all your vehicles.
- Order refills of all your prescriptions and those for your pets.
- Reserve a room out of the area if you are evacuating.
After a Storm Hits
- Pay vendors for emergency repairs.
- Make purchases for necessary supplies.
- Cover the cost of an extended hotel room if you can’t get home right away.
