Space Coast Credit Union Members Raise $106,000 for Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts
Beatrice Benjamin knows more than most of us about the impact of the earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. She lost 13 members of her family that day, and those who survived continue to struggle with finding shelter.
"I keep hearing the words 'in the streets' from my relatives and it is very difficult to know that this is the situation they are in," stated Ms. Benjamin.
Given her personal association with this tragic event, Ms. Benjamin was pleased to represent her employer, Space Coast Credit Union, as she presented a check for $106,423 to the Red Cross to benefit the Haiti Appeal Fund. The presentation took place at the credit union’s headquarters in Melbourne, Florida. Ms. Benjamin is an Associate in the credit union’s Member Service Center.
The funds were raised in a cooperative effort between the credit union and its members, who made their donations at the 63 branches of the credit union, all of which are located in Florida. "We offered to match our members’ contributions up to $50,000," said Doug Samuels, the credit union’s President and CEO. "We have put this match offer before our members previously in response to just a few extraordinary events, such as Hurricane Katrina, but this was by far the largest response we have ever received," stated Samuels. "By offering to act as a collection point for our members’ contributions and match their donations, the members let us know how important any particular effort is to them. That way, any donation we make directly reflects the interests of our membership. As a cooperative, we strive to facilitate giving from our members rather than making decisions on their behalf."
Contributions from individual credit union members ranged from change donated by students to as much as several thousand dollars.
"The credit union does not respond to all disasters in this manner," said Meredith Gibson, Senior Vice President, Marketing, "but the Haiti earthquake was an extraordinary event that directly impacted the communities served by the credit union and that would not be readily served through existing relief resources." The credit union chose the Red Cross because of its experience in dealing with international disaster relief, and also due to its stated intention to work towards providing shelter and basic sanitation for the survivors. The Red Cross continues to provide tarps and tents to those without shelter and assistance with repairs for those whose homes were damaged but not destroyed.
