A Message from Douglas R. Samuels, President/CEO Recently, I read of proposals in the works to regulate the online consumer ratings we’ve all gotten used to reading. User feedback and reviews have become invaluable in the success of the online auction and merchandising world. But of course, many of us have learned the hard way that not all of the reviews are legitimate. For example, I recently traveled to another state to attend an event involving the Army. After using a popular online travel site that included “user” reviews to choose and book my hotel, I happened to mention my hotel choice to one of the military personnel, who informed me that my selected hotel was not anything like the glowing online reviews had indicated. It was, in fact, in an area that was so dangerous that the base personnel were prohibited from going there. I had been deceived by the management of the hotel, who had submitted reviews to misrepresent the truth and take advantage of unknowing consumers. This is why, when we implemented our “Watchdog Rating” system last year, we established very tight constraints for the collection, administration, and reporting of this very important member information.
