Perspectives November 2012

Cathy Cobb

The holiday shopping season is right around the corner, and I would like to take a moment to tell you about the great Visa® Debit and Credit Cards we have available to SCCU members and the important security features they include for your protection.

SCCU’s Visa® Debit Card is a convenient alternative to writing checks. It looks like a credit card and can be used for purchases anywhere you see the Visa® logo, but purchases made using your debit card come right out of your checking account. There are no annual, monthly, or transaction fees and your transactions are described on your monthly statement and Online Banking history. Your debit card also enables you to get cash at any time at any SCCU ATM or any ATM displaying the Accel/Exchange®, Plus®, or Visa logo.

SCCU also offers Platinum Visa Credit Cards with ScoreCard® Rewards. These accounts feature the same low credit union rates for purchases and cash advances, and reward you just for using your card. Earn 1 point for every eligible $1 spent to earn rewards such as merchandise, travel discounts, or even a reduction on the amount of your next SCCU vehicle loan! You also have the option of choosing SCCU’s charitable Pink Platinum Visa Credit Card, which automatically donates half of your rewards points directly to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation.

Regardless of what kind of account you have with SCCU, keeping your financial information secure is of the utmost importance to us. Here is an overview of security features built-in to our Debit and Credit cards to help keep your accounts safe during the holiday shopping season and all year long:

Fraud Monitoring Service: SCCU provides Falcon Fraud Protection for all Visa Credit and Debit cards at no charge. This fraud protection system recognizes your personal purchasing patterns and can detect possible fraud. Should we notice any unusual transactions on your account, you may receive a personal phone call from the SCCU Service Center. If you confirm that there has been fraudulent use of your card, your card will immediately be blocked to prevent further activity. It is important that we have your current daytime/cell phone number and address on file, because if our fraud monitoring service cannot reach you to report suspected fraudulent activity, your card may be blocked until we hear from you. In addition, please remember to contact us if you have travel plans that will prevent you from being reached while you are away. If we know in advance that you will be out of the area or country, we can note your account accordingly to ensure your credit/debit card functionality remains uninterrupted.

Visa Card Protection: Visa Credit and Debit cards provided by SCCU are covered by several layers of protection. The Visa Zero Liability policy guarantees you won’t be held responsible for any unauthorized transactions made with your card or account information.* If you are looking for additional protection for your account while shopping online, activate your card’s free Verified by Visa service. This free service enables you to establish an online password that can be used to confirm your identity while shopping at participating online retailers. It just takes a few minutes to activate this service on the secure Visa website.

Online Security: SCCU’s secure website uses the latest technology to ensure that your information is kept confidential. When accessing SCCU Online Banking or other secure pages on SCCU.com, your personal information is encrypted before it leaves your computer so that no one else can read it. When you enroll in Online Banking, you are automatically enrolled in SCCU’s Identity Verification, which helps prevent unauthorized access to your account. This enhanced security feature uses questions and answers you personally choose, in addition to your username and password, to validate your identity and authorize your account access. Because Online Statements can’t be stolen from your mail box, I recommend cancelling your printed statements mailed to you monthly and enrolling in e-Statements instead. You’ll get a secure email alert as soon as your monthly statement is available – no waiting for the mail to arrive and no clutter to file away later! You don’t even have to wait for your monthly statement alert to see what activity has occurred on your account; simply log on to SCCU.com anytime to view your balance, transaction history, and statement history. If you have never used SCCU's free Online Banking service, it only takes a moment to sign up: just click here and then click on "Enroll in Online Banking" to get started.

Account Alerts: While you are logged in to Online Banking, take a moment to set up free alerts on your account. This makes keeping track of your account(s) even easier since we deliver the information you want right to your phone or inbox! Choose from a wide range of alerts, including transaction alerts, balance alerts, and more. Our free alerts allow you to frequently monitor your account, which not only helps prevent unauthorized activity, but also helps keep your spending within budget during this busy time of year.

I hope this information has been helpful to you in preparing for your holiday season. We’re constantly looking out for the best interests of our members and ensuring the security of your information. Please contact us if you have any questions or if we can be of any assistance.
