A vacation to a different country is such an adventure! You get to meet new people, eat regional food, and buy souvenirs. Before planning a trip abroad, read all about World Traveling.
Here are some helpful tips and questions to answer:
Get to know the culture of the country you are traveling to. Speak to others about their experiences in that country. Some questions to ask:
What places do you recommend to stay at, eat at, or visit? Is there any advice you wish to give concerning these places? This “insider” advice can help you plan your itinerary or make other arrangements if you don’t get to visit a particular attraction.
Are the sights easy to get to, or do I need to prepare transportation? For some sights, you may be able to walk the city; others may require public transportation or even a flight.
What are some of the customary things people do there? For example, in some European countries, the residents participate in ‘siesta’; many places of business close for 1-2 hours for lunch. This is good to know if you are planning to visit a city that celebrates this custom so you can plan your sightseeing time accordingly.
Know the type of weather that country experiences. You will want to bring the right clothes for the time of year you will be visiting. Also, some places actually enforce a dress code, especially if you are visiting a religious venue.
Know the country’s currency. Not many foreign places take American money, so you will need to exchange it for the local currency. Be aware of the exchange rate and any exchange fees associated. Also know that many credit card companies charge exchange fees to use their card abroad, usually a percentage of the total transaction.
Be sure all the appropriate government paperwork is taken care of in advance. Right now, there is a backlog of about three months to receive a U.S. passport. It’s a good idea in instances like this to prepare for your trip even further in advance, so you don’t get stuck trying to change all your plans due to a setback.
Call or logon to the airline or cruise website to learn about any restrictions while traveling. Currently, airlines have restrictions on amounts & types of liquid substances that can go in your carry-on bags. Cruise lines have few restrictions, but it’s best to check first before you board.
Enjoy your trip!
