JDRF/ADA Fake Representative Fraud Alert
SCCU has recently received reports from members in the Miami Springs area about a fake door-to-door fundraiser who claims to be collecting donations for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF), American Diabetes Association (ADA), and Step Out (a Fundraising program, benefiting the ADA). This individual has been collecting donation checks and altering them to increase the value from $10-$15 to $110-$215.
SCCU has reported this illegal activity to the local authorities; however, please be cautious about anyone soliciting for donations, especially in the Miami Springs area. While there are some legitimate fundraisers who go door-to-door to raise money for their cause, you should always ask the person questions and review the materials provided very closely. If you believe the person at your door may be the scammer in question, please contact the police. Or, if you have doubts but still want to support the cause, contact the organization directly to contribute or confirm the identity of the fundraiser(s).
Although the specific details of this incident are unique, this scammer is using a common type of check fraud called check washing. One way to avoid becoming a victim of this type of fraud is to be sure there are no large blank spaces in the number or amount lines on the checks that you write.
Using caution with your private information is the best way you can help prevent being victimized.
