Microsoft Confirms Security Flaw in Internet Explorer, How You Can Stay Secure

Member information and security are very important to us at SCCU.

Microsoft has acknowledged a security flaw in its widely used Internet Explorer browser that could possibly put online banking users at risk. SCCU has confirmed this problem to solely be a browser-related issue. All SCCU Online Services – including, SCCU Online Banking, and SCCU Mobile Banking – remain safe and secure.

Microsoft describes the flaw as a remote code execution vulnerability existing in versions 6 through 11 of Internet Explorer, which is used by about one in four online consumers. This means that a hacker who takes advantage of the flaw could manipulate code from a remote server that fools unsuspecting users into clicking on malicious links.

While Microsoft says it has seen "limited attacks" exploiting the vulnerability, SCCU members using Internet Explorer should take the following necessary steps in order to further protect themselves from this potential risk:

·         Check your current version of Internet Explorer and upgrade if necessary.

In April, Microsoft discontinued technical support for Internet Explorer 8, meaning users will no longer receive the automatic updates and security patches that help protect their PCs. As a result, Internet Explorer 8 users will be more susceptible to this new security flaw. Members are advised to check the version of your current browser and upgrade to a new browser if necessary.

·         Also, if you currently use Windows XP, you may want to upgrade to a newer operating system.

Microsoft also discontinued technical support for Windows XP in April, resulting in users of this operating system to be more vulnerable to security threats as well. Members still running Windows XP can learn more about upgrading their operating system by visiting
