SCCU Member Hurricane Checklist

August 28, 2019 by Timothy M. Antonition

As we make our way through yet another hurricane season, it causes me to reflect on how we can assist you in being prepared in the event a storm approaches where you live. Overall we have been relatively lucky in the last several years; however, we always need to be prepared.

While we work very hard to ensure the credit union is always up and running, there is a chance your local branch could be closed during and/or after a storm. The safety of our employees is a top priority that we balance with minimizing the amount of time a local branch is closed. We will work to stay open as late as possible as a storm approaches and open as soon as possible after it has passed. Power, damage, and employee availability all play a part in how quickly we can return to service.

In the event your local branch does close, there are several other services you can use to manage your finances from home:

Online Banking:  We offer a full-service Online Banking system that allows you to manage your finances in a variety of ways, including transferring money, paying bills and checking your account balances. If you are not enrolled today, I encourage you to do so as another way to prepare for hurricane season.

Mobile Banking:  Our free Mobile Banking application allows you to make many of the same transactions as Online Banking, plus you can make check deposits straight from your mobile device. If you don’t have a smart phone, you could still take advantage of our free text banking to check balances and view account history.

SCCU.com:  If a storm is approaching, we will provide you with information on SCCU.com regarding early branch closures and when we can expect those branches to return to service. We will also provide specific information about extended branch closures that may be necessary due to unsafe conditions.  In all cases, SCCU.com is always your best source of information.

SCCU also offers home equity loans which can be used to upgrade your house and better prepare for a storm. Whether you are buying impact resistant windows or hurricane shutters, you may be able to use the equity in your home to make this purchase. If you think you don’t have equity, you might want to check again. Many homes have increased in value over the last several years and many members like you are taking advantage of this equity to renovate their homes, install a pool, or prepare for a storm. Our home equity loans are fast and easy with no application fee required. We offer fixed and variable rate loans and we also can set up a line of credit so you can use it again in the future if you need it.

So, don’t forget to add the following items to your hurricane preparedness checklist:

  1. If your local branch does close, monitor your account and perform transactions with online and mobile banking
  2. Watch SCCU.com for information before, during, and after a storm
  3. Upgrade your home’s hurricane protection by accessing a home equity loan from Space Coast Credit Union
