U.S. Penny Discontinuation

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s happening with the penny?
The U.S. Mint will stop producing pennies starting in early 2026. Your existing pennies will still be legal tender. You can continue to use them, save them, or deposit them as usual.
Will the Credit Union and other banks still accept pennies?
Absolutely! Our branches will continue to accept pennies for deposits and transactions.
Is the penny phase-out a decision made by credit unions or banks?
No, the U.S. federal government made this decision through the Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Mint. We’re simply following the federal directive.
Will I still receive pennies when cashing checks?
Yes, while supplies last.
Can I still request pennies?
Unfortunately, we’re unable to fill penny orders.
Can I place a special order for pennies?
Sorry, but we can’t fulfill this order. Our cash supplier is no longer providing pennies due to the U.S. government’s decision to discontinue penny production. However, you’re welcome to deposit your pennies as usual.
What do I do with pennies I have at home?
You can keep using your pennies as normal. If you have a large quantity, feel free to deposit them, loose or rolled, at your local branch.
Can branches hold pennies for me?
Unfortunately, branches can’t reserve pennies for members.
